INTRODUCING UUAMP
INTRODUCING UUAMP
We had an amazing kickoff of the Utah UUAMP program. On August 4, we held an open house at Columbus’s NextWork location. The open house was attended by 25 people with questions about the program. We took some time to fill out Vocational Rehabilitation applications, and NextWork staff provided support.
After a survey, interview, and assessment using Lego Robotics, we selected 6 students for our first cohort, which begins on October 6. It was difficult to choose the students because by the time we made the decision, we had 34 applicants! Clearly there is a great deal of interest in this type of program here in Salt Lake City. We anticipate great success.
WHAT IS UUAMP?
The Uniquely Abled Project (UAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating sustainable employment pathways for adults on the autism spectrum and other neurodivergent individuals. Its mission is to connect overlooked talent to high-demand careers by partnering directly with industry and training providers.
Utah Uniquely Abled Machinist Program (UUAMP) is a pioneering initiative that is gearing up to launch in October 2025 developed through a collaboration between the Columbus Foundation, Salt Lake Community College (SLCC), the Utah Manufacturers Association (UMA), and the Utah Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). The program is tailored towards adults with autism; a group often facing unemployment rates between 60–90%. The program aims to address this while filling critical skilled labor gaps in Utah's manufacturing sector, including CNC manufacturing.
Manufacturing partners in Utah, some with nearly 200 CNC job openings, are poised to hire UUAMP graduates. Companies like Paramount Machine have already pledged to support and hire from the pilot cohort.

WHAT IS CNC?
Computer Numerical Control (CNC), is a method of automating machine tools through the use of computers executing pre-programmed sequences of commands.
Instead of manually guiding a tool (like a drill, mill, or lathe), CNC machines are controlled by precise digital instructions, typically written in a programming language such as G-code. These instructions tell the machine exactly where to move, how fast to move, and what path to follow, ensuring high accuracy and repeatability.
CNC is the backbone of modern manufacturing, allowing complex parts to be made quickly, accurately, and consistently by computer-controlled machines. The products made using CNC technology are used for a huge range of industries and everyday life, including medical equipment, car parts, aircraft, home appliances, military equipment, and plenty more!
UUAMP is dedicated to aiding neurodivergent individuals into this key industry to modern life! High attention to detail and not minding repetitive work are a must for working with CNC machinery.
